Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What are dental crowns and what issues can they treat?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped covers or “caps” that cover all visible portions of your natural tooth tissue. They are a versatile restorative treatment that can address a wide range of issues.

Crowns can be made of metal, porcelain, or a combination of porcelain or ceramic over a metal base. Each material option has a unique set of advantages and limitations, but Dr. Silva works with you to help you choose the right fit for your specific set of needs.

Some of the reasons you might choose a dental crown include:

  • Protecting a tooth weakened by multiple dental treatments
  • Improving cosmetic issues like discoloration or irregularities in size or shape
  • Strengthening a cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth
  • As the anchoring for a dental bridge
  • As the final step in a dental implant
  • Covering and protecting a worn down tooth

During your consultation, Dr. Silva discusses the pros and cons of dental crowns and all other available options.

What is the process for getting a dental crown?

Getting a custom dental crown requires several office visits, but the results are well worth your patience. During your initial visit, you might need imaging to reveal more information about the structure of your teeth and bone tissue.

If a dental crown is right for you, Dr. Silva begins by removing a small portion of your natural tooth tissue to make room for the crown. A scan of the prepared tooth is taken to guide the creation of your new crown. She places a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth while you wait for the dental lab to fabricate your custom crown.

Once your crown arrives from the lab, you’ll return to have it checked for fit and appearance before being cemented into place. This completes the treatment, and your restored tooth will be checked during subsequent dental exams.

What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration that serves to replace one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges allow the change to deliver aesthetic improvements while also strengthening your bite and improving your ability to eat and speak normally.

A dental bridge consists of one or more false teeth anchored in place by a dental crown on the adjacent natural teeth.

The false teeth in a dental bridge are crafted to match the exact shade of your smile and are completely customized to blend seamlessly with your smile.
